Why can't Surrogates Be on Government Assistance During Their Journey

“Why can’t I be on government assistance if I want to become a surrogate?”

It’s a common question—and one that deserves a thoughtful explanation. Surrogacy is a great opportunity to help families grow, and while surrogates are generously compensated for their commitment, there are important qualifications to ensure the process is smooth, ethical, and compliant.

One requirement is that surrogates cannot receive government or state assistance during their journey. At first, this might seem confusing, especially when surrogates are supported financially by the intended parents. However, the reasoning ties into legal, financial, and program-related factors that protect everyone involved: you, the intended parents, and the surrogacy agency.

Let’s break it down and explain why this rule exists—and how Flying Stork Surrogacy ensures that every surrogate is fully supported, every step of the way.

Financial Independence and Surrogacy Compensation

As a surrogate, you’ll receive generous compensation that reflects your time, effort, and dedication to helping intended parents build their family. However, this additional income can affect eligibility for government assistance programs, such as Medicaid (MediCal), food support, or housing assistance.

These programs are based on specific financial thresholds. Receiving surrogacy compensation, even when provided as part of the journey, can create conflicts with these thresholds and result in a loss of benefits.

This requirement is in place to ensure there are no disruptions to the surrogate’s support systems or conflicts with program guidelines, creating a stress-free and seamless experience for everyone involved.

What About Insurance?

If you’re currently on a program like MediCal, don’t worry—you won’t be left without support. Once you’re matched with intended parents, Flying Stork Surrogacy will secure surrogacy-friendly insurance to ensure all medical costs are covered. At that point, you can cancel MediCal for yourself. Until then, no changes are required, as all expenses will be fully covered by the intended parents.

This ensures a smooth transition and gives you peace of mind knowing that your journey—and your family—are fully taken care of.

Support Every Step of the Way

At Flying Stork Surrogacy, we understand that surrogates have questions, concerns, and families of their own to care for. That’s why we:

You are never alone in this journey—our team, and the intended parents you are matched with, are here to take care of you every step of the way.

The rule about not receiving government assistance during surrogacy is in place to ensure a smooth, ethical, and legally compliant experience. With Flying Stork Surrogacy, you’ll receive the support, guidance, and coverage you need to focus on what truly matters: helping a family’s dreams come true while achieving your own goals.
